Cannabis/Marijuana has been utilized for centuries for a multitude of purposes. From healing medicinally, to magic, & for recreational use. Tinctures, edibles, salves/skincare, smoking it, etc are some of the most common forms of consumption & use today. These ways are also often used by practitioners for a variety of reasons, from continuing spell & ritual work, to simple enjoyment or self healing. What's wonderful about this plant is the versatility & multifaceted energy. In this piece I'll break down the magical correspondences, different ways to work with cannabis in spell work, in your daily rituals, creating a healthy relationship with this plant, understanding the use for psychoactive properties, & more.
Planetary & Elemental Correspondences
(Some say it also corresponds with Venus & Jupiter)
Elements: Earth & Water
Magic uses: Love spells, money spells, cleansing/purification, divination/psychic enhancement & connection, healing & protection. If you're working with hemp, the string can be used in binding work, cord cutting work, clearing spaces energetically. As well as what you program the intent of the herb to be used for. This is part of cannabis's versatility & multifacetedness. Some even refer to it as the quartz of herbs because it can be used to amplify or programmed for what you need. (We'll discuss more of that later).
Gender association: Cannabis can be both male & female, as both plants are used. It is possible for dual-gendered cannabis plants to exist as well. The female is usually preferred by growers, for smoking or making medicine because they produce bigger buds & have a thick layer of cannabinoid packed resin on the outside. This resin also is part of reproduction where it makes it so the female can collect pollen from the male & become fertilized. In part, this is one of the properties that makes this plant useful in love, attraction, abundance, or fertility spells. Male plants have lower levels of cannabinoids but they can be useful for making edibles & extracts.
Now, some follow a practice of casting a circle before any ritual, some work with the four directions, some call in their guides & ancestors, some just go to their altar etc. Follow your personal practice of preparation before doing the following.
If you prefer to smoke your cannabis you can make a ritual out of it by doing the following:
Bless the weed, & set an intention before prepping it or as you grind it. You can program it in a quartz, rose quartz, or amethyst crystal bowl or slab. I suggest only using ones that have been "sealed". To avoid inhaling any bits. Speak your intention into it, or do this hand exercise: rub your hands together, when they feel warm slowly bring them a bit apart & feel the energy between them. Visualize a ball of light as you feel it, when ready hold your hands over the herb. Visualize the energy going into the herb & filling it with your intent. When you feel this is complete you can continue your prep. If that includes rolling, over using a pipe: try using an edible/non-toxic ink to write on your papers. Can be your intention, your spell, or sigils! If using a pipe, consider what the material is made of. Whether it be crystal or clay, etc. Connect with that element. If you are smoking a joint & want it to be a spell/ritualistic, you can include candle color magic.
Use the color candle that corresponds with your intent (white can be universal, green for money or heart healing, red for love, etc) & light your joint with it. Let the candle burn down even if you don't fully smoke the joint. If using a pipe or bong, you can light a hemp wick with the candle, & use that for your bong or pipe as well.
You can also add other herbs that are safe to smoke, which correspond with your spellwork. Such as rose, lavender, hibiscus, damiana, for love etc. I will make a separate post about herbs that are smokeable, & their magic uses.
A note about bong use: you can get really intentional with your bong water, not just the material of the bong. Some use moon water, or sun charged water, you can use crystal infused waters (for this method I suggest infusing the water by placing the crystal on top of the jar lid that you have your water in. To avoid inhaling anything that may harm your lungs). This incorporates another element that cannabis possesses (water) & can amplify that power. It also can be an added ingredient for your intentional consumption.
A note about pipe use: we have all heard of the apple pipe/bong, this can be a new way to amp up your use of apples in love spells! Adding the element of smoking out of it can help add more fire to your love life, & power to your love spell. If you're using a crystal pipe that can be another way to keep your spell work going/amplify it. If you're using a clay pipe, call in that earth energy that cannabis & the clay possess! This can make for a grounded, but uplifted experience.
You can dress candles with crushed cannabis, or make an infused anointing oil with it as well! This can also be used to dress your candles, & even yourself.
If you're working with the oil topically, consider using it before or during healing work, during self love work, sex magic alone or with your partner, anointing your third eye with it before psychic work or meditation, etc. Let your intuition guide you.
If you want to work with cannabis for psychic & meditative work, follow your personal way of prepping for that. You can then either, smoke a little/micro dose (some prefer CBD for this, but I personally prefer the uplifting & "lifting of the veil" that strains with THC provide). As you do this, connect with the herb & let it flow. Proceed with your meditative or psychic process. When you are finished, thank the herb for all that it has revealed to you. Thank it for the uplifting energy, & guidance. This can include automatic writing, where you allow the spirits to channel through you & you just write down what comes. I find cannabis to be exceptionally helpful with this for those who like to work with it, & are looking to expand on their automatic writing process.
A note about tobacco use with cannabis: some use a strip of fronto, some use blunt wraps, some use dried crushed tobacco added in for protection, & grounding during use or smoking with others. This is a personal choice, & if you want, you can substitute with other protective herbs that are smokeable.
When using cannabis to clear a space: burn the leaves as an incense, or a resin of cannabis as an incense to clear a space & uplift the energy. You can add other herbs to your blend as well! Move through out the space, ensuring the smoke gets into corners. Always keep at least one window open when clearing a space, you need an exit for what you're clearing from the space.
Cannabis can be used in a bath recipe as well, I would suggest the big leaves over the buds- unless you are using this for it's attraction properties (the stickiness mentioned before). Be very clear with your intentions with this, so as to avoid attracting sticky situations.
This is a base of information to help you better understand the cannabis plant, & its uses. Feel free to get creative with how you incorporate it. I will be sharing some of my spells, & recipes for cannabis magic in a separate post. Including a honey jar recipe that I have crafted with cannabis, for a better relationship with self, & one for a better connection with the divine feminine that is within everyone- regardless of gender identity.
Cannabis/Marijuana is such a special powerhouse herb as discussed before. It's versatile & can be used for so many things. Smoking, edibles (such as tea, baked goods, or infused goods), & topical (oils) have been some of the most common uses. Spells, baths, space cleansing, are also ways this herb can be used. Many practitioners will continue working a spell or ritual, by continuing to work with the herbs they used in different ways. Some will smoke them, some will sip on them or cook with them, some will wear them (or do all 3) to continue working their spell. Below I'm going to list different herbs you can smoke, & add to your smoke blends. Many of these herbs can also be used for a tea, a bath, to dress your candles, can be infused into an oil etc. I will also make note of their magical correspondence & what to be mindful of. I will share my honey jar recipe as well.
*Always check with your doctor before consuming herbs, due to possible interaction with medication, medical conditions, or allergies etc.*
Blue Lotus: Blue Lotus has been associated with the Moon, psychic gifts/enhancement, & more. Used for its euphoric properties, as an aphrodisiac, & for connecting to the spirit world, as well as inducing lucid dreaming. It is associated with sensuality, rebirth, creation, the spirit world/spiritual. It can make a nice addition to a tea (or as it's own tea), or in your smokeable. Especially if you want to incorporate the water connection.
Catnip: Catnip is associated with Venus, cat magic, love, beauty, attraction. Often used in magic to attract love (some say more specifically a man, but I do find it can invite that cat sensual energy regardless of gender). Adding it to your cannabis if you've been working with it on a candle can amplify the energy of that herb in your life. Providing a sensual, sexy smoke. If you smoke before sex, or self pleasure, try adding this in. Use your orgasms to continue your manifestations. The possibilities of ways to incorporate boosting your work are endless!
Calendula: Calendula is associated with the sun & is often used to call in that energy. Uplifting, sunshine type of energy, they also invite in good luck. Consider them petals of gold. Adding this into your cannabis can invite a nice soothing, but uplifting feel. It can also be adding to a smoke blend without cannabis. It is used in many spells, so being able to incorporate it into your smoking is again, a great way to work it. It makes for a nice tea if you have a cold, or if you have the flu add some honey. It will make you sweat it out a bit.
Chamomile: Both Roman & German are associated with the sun. It provides a calming effect, but can also provide a sunny mood when smoked alone. When you add it to cannabis it can help to invite in more of that sunny energy. Its also a common tea enjoyed by many. Both are often used in purification spells, & can be protective as well.
Coltsfoot *note that this is an expectorant, it should be used when you need to cough up mucus or clear out your lungs. I included this as it is smokable, but would not advise smoking this regularly or with your cannabis. Some use it as a tobacco substitute. Coltsfoot is associated with Venus & water. It is used in love spells, but when smoked it is used to induce visions.
Damiana: Damiana is associated with Mars & fire. It is used for love, & lust spells, as well as to induce visions. It is often used as an Aphrodisiac & in lust potions etc. Smoking it can provide that effect as well, but it can also induce visions.
Hibiscus: Hibiscus is associated with Venus, & Water. Energetically used for love, lust, & divination. The leaves have long been used in love work, & to induce lustful feelings. The tea is one of it's most common forms of consumption, as well as in waters, etc. The red flowers are stimulating, & passion invoking. When smoked they add a nice touch, as well as a sensual, seductive sexy smoke. Perfect for when you're working on connecting with your sensuality, & falling in love with yourself. It can also be used with your partner to bring in some added passion.
Lavender: Lavender is associated with Mercury & Air. Used for love spells, purification, sleep, longevity, purification, peace, happiness, psychic/spiritual connection. Incorporating it into your smoke blend can provide protective energies, as well as purification. Uplifting your mood, while also calming you. If you've been using it in your baths, or as an oil- you can add the dry herb to your smoke blends as well to bring even more of that energy into your life. I find it to be a nice addition to cannabis, it provides a soft smoke that is gentle on your lungs.
Lemon Balm: Lemon Balm is associated with the Moon, Neptune & Water. Energetically used for compassion, anxiety, healing, cleansing, success, & love. It is a nice complimenting herb to add to your smoke blend to increase the success of your ritual work, but also to aid in soothing anxiety. It is helpful in cleansing energetically as well, so if you want to visualize your inhales of smoke as an internal smoke cleanse that would be an excellent adaptation.
Marshmallow Root: Marshmallow Root is associated with Venus & Water. Energetically used for increasing psychic powers, grounding, protection, it can be used in love & fertility work as well. Some use it to cleanse spaces in incense blends as well. It is also used to create medicine for the through, & digestive system. More commonly associated with the throat, & opening the throat chakra.
Mint: Mint is associated with Mercury, & Air. Energetically used for money/prosperity work, lust, healing, protection, travel, & exorcism/cleansing. It adds a nice menthol to your smoke blends, as well as makes a nice tea. The tea is a decongestant, & soothing for the stomach. Both drinking it in tea, or smoking it can continue your ritual work. If you are quitting cigarettes, you can add some mint to your blends to provide you with the menthol if you preferred menthol in your cigarettes.
Mugwort: Mugwort is associated with Venus, & the Earth element. Energetically it is used for many things, psychic enhancement, protection, to induce prophetic dreams & visions, astral projection, healing, strength, cleansing & removing spirits, to keep away evil spirits, to increase fertility, even more. Mugwort is often an essential herb in any witches herbal cabinet.
Mullein: Mullein is associated with Saturn & Fire. Energetically used for protection, health, love, protection, divination, courage, & cleansing/exorcism. Mullein is often used as a tobacco alternative, it's light & fluffy so it rolls easily. It can act as an expectorant when smoked, & will clean out your lungs of tars etc from smoking cigarettes. If you're switching or cutting out tobacco, mullein can be a nice replacement.
Passion Flower: Passion flower is associated with Venus, & Water. Energetically used for peace, friendship work, & tranquil sleep. Many use Passion flower in a tea or smoked to help aid with their anxiety, & bring a sense of calm. It's also said to aid in the attraction of friendship.
Red Raspberry Leaf: Red Raspberry Leaf is associated with Venus, & Water. Energetically used for fertility, to "keep" your lover from straying, connecting to the great mother (Earth). The tea is often used by those experiencing menstrual cramps, incorporating cannabis into your use with this herb can help if you're experiencing a particularly difficult menstrual cycle. The leaves are usually added to a bath to "keep" your partner from straying.
Rose: Rose is associated with Venus & Water. Energetically used for love, healing, luck, protection, love divination, & psychic enhancement. Many have used rose petals as an alternative to rolling papers, this can invite in protection, & loving energy. As well as enhancing psychic abilities. The same for if you use pieces of rose petals in your smoke blend. Roses are used in everything from baths, as a skincare item (rosewater, which often doubles as an energetic spray), to dressing candles, etc. You can even make a rose tea for heart healing! The possibilities are endless!
Sage: Sage is associated with Jupiter, & Air. Though White Sage is associated with Venus, & Earth. Energetically it is used for many things, from protection, wishes, healing, to cleansing. Depending on the color or type of sage you use. It is currently not advised to use white sage unless you are growing your own, because of it being over harvested.
St. Johns Wort: Associated with the Sun, & Fire. Energetically used for protection, strength, love, divination, happiness, & health. Often used for it's mental health benefits in the medicinal community. Burning it is often done to banish negative spirits from the space.
Tobacco: Tobacco is associated with Mars, & Fire. Energetically used for healing, purification, divine/spiritual connection, & protection. It is often used as an offering to spirits as well, not just the smoke (which can be blown as an offering)- many will leave it on their altar as an offering. Often used in spliffs, Fonto is the non-processed tobacco leaf (it is dried, & "cured" but with no additives such as flavoring etc). It is often used as a wrap for cannabis smokers, some will use a thinly cut strip with rolling papers. Please note, smoking tobacco is connected to an an increased risk of cancer, infertility, & more. Consume responsibly.
This is not a complete list of herbs, but it is a base list. There are so many different herbs, it would be hard to cover them all in one post. If you want to add an herb I didn't list, please double (if not triple check) that it is safe to be smoked. Not all herbs are safe to be smoked. Also, please use these herbs in moderation- a little goes a long way. You don't need to add too much to get an effect. Once again, always consult with your doctor first before using herbs to be safe.
Cannabis Sensual Self Love Smoke Blend
(*If you are allergic to anything included, or if you prefer not to consume please omit that*)
Cannabis, Catnip, Rose, Lavender, Hibiscus, Mint *Tobacco is optional as a wrap or pieces etc. A Hemp wrap is also an option.*
Smoke this blend when you want to feel sensual, & take time with yourself. I enjoy smoking this & giving myself a massage. Sometimes I follow up with self pleasure induced sex magic, sometimes I don't. Even the act of just connecting with these herbs & my body can be something that is healing for your relationship with yourself. This can be a heavy smoke sometimes & so its best used at night or when you have the option of at least a nap, if not fully going to sleep.
Self Love Cannabis Honey Jar
Now, before I explain this honey jar- know that this spell is for you to work with your energy, it is not related to a particular deity. This is not an Oshun self love honey jar etc. This is one that is all you boo. While deities can be helpful, when it comes to our own love, I find that we are enough. Our love is sacred, & self love is about sharing that with ourselves. Not just others. Who's energy would be better to call in than your own for this? This is also best cast on a Full Moon, or the New Moon.
Get your vessel, I prefer a mason jar but most jars will do.
Grab a pink or white taper spell candle. It doesn't have to be the biggest one. You can even opt for a pink or white heart shaped one.
Grab your honey (if you have cannabis honey this can be an added bonus). You will add this last.
Have a picture you love most of yourself & put it in the jar. It can be a copy. You can also include a petition of what you are working towards in the jar with your picture.
Small Rose Quartz or a piece of real Gold are optional, but can amplify it.
*Please note you cannot take anything in this back out.*
If you can create a playlist of songs that make you feel yo self - make one & play it as you do this work.
Otherwise, you can play any sounds that you generally work with for manifestation or love work.
Honor the four directions, & if you work with certain spirits, your ancestors, your guides, etc call them in as you would for protection & overall blessing. For any work you do. I want you to also call in your higher self, because that's who will be helping us with this as well.
Finely grind cannabis, catnip, damiana, & mint, add to the jar, add lavender, jasmine & rose buds (not finely grounded, pink or white preferred), & cinnamon- can be powdered or a stick. Pour the honey over it just enough to cover when you have added all of your ingredients. Speak your intention into it as you pour the honey in.
When you feel you've spoken your intention best you can, take a moment to visualize (while holding the jar) what your ideal version of self love would be. This doesn't have to be anything like what society says. What is YOUR version. Visualize as if it has already happened.
When you are done, close the lid & put the candle on top of the lid. When you light the candle repeat the following:
My love is kind, my love is sweet
My love for self, grows ever sweeter towards me
My love is shared with others, after I share it with me
My love is sacred, & I love myself unconditionally
(repeat 6 times).
Focus on the flame, visualize it manifesting a closer connection with yourself. Feel it happening already, visualize it as if it has already happened.
When the candle has burned out leave this on your altar to continue its work. You can visualize light going into it daily, you can hold it & connect with it, you can engage in sex magick & intentionally use your orgasm to charge this jar. You can do so by visualizing the jar when you climax, & energy going into it. You can also do it by visualizing the outcome you want, when you're climaxing. Some people bring their jar through out the home while they do different things, & speak life into them through out the day. Some leave them on the altar, ask your higher self to guide you. After 7 days, you can bury it. If you can't bury it anywhere due to social distancing etc, some have buried it in a big pot of dirt at home for the time being.
